MAKING MARKS & DOWNHAM MARKET
CARVED WALL

This magnificently carved York Stone wall is in the centre of historic Downham Market. Our aim was to create a piece which celebrated the life of the town and acknowledged its role as a geographical, economic and social meeting place.

Through facilitated workshops, local school children aged 7-16 explored the theme by creating poems and images, which we were then able to incorporate into our design.

The hand carved designs and text allow the play of light & shadow over the surface, while the narrative and detail draw people to return again and again to explore and discover new things. In the 3 years since installation there has been no damage or graffiti to the wall, a testament to the involvement of young people, the process used and the quality of artistic skill which was used to give impact to the final piece.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID:
'These images have been incorporated into the panels that are an important part of the new town square. They are a permanent reminder not only of our young people's view of the town but also their inspiring contribution to the regeneration of the Town Centre.'

JENNY GROOM

'Making Marks brought the scheme to life, injecting the vital ingredients of community involvement, a sense of ownership and civic pride.'
