WAYLAND PARTNERSHIPWATTON SCULPTUREFor this exciting project, Making Marks involved the community by generating enthusiasm, interest and participation in the creation of an inspiring work of public art - reflecting not only the life of Watton Town but the culture of the surrounding Wayland area. Making Marks made contact with 7 Primary Schools and the High School - all of which showed great interest in the project and were enthusiastic about involving their pupils. We also ran workshops for adults, making contact through churches, community groups and regular articles in the local Wayland News. And a stall at the Farmers Market elicited much interest and enthusiasm, helping to gauge what type of artwork might be appropriate. In our research Making Marks came across the historical seal. Cylinder seals have been found worldwide, and were first used around 6000 BC. They represent power and authority and celebrate aspects of the life of an important person or community. Making Marks saw seals as a wonderful means to develop artwork for Watton which could reflect the varied and rich tapestry of local life, and explore the never-ending cycle of continuity that the circle offers. The seal is flexible and allow prints or impressions to be taken and placed in important places for the communities of Wayland, such as schools, churches, village halls or civic centres.
